Here you will find my research
links to the peninsular war. This page relates to the research for
my work in progress Gus Landen and the Price of Justice
The Battle of Porto Following
the evacuation of Sir John Moore's army from La Coruņa in
January 1809, French armies under Soult and Victor invaded
Portugal. Soult took Porto and moved his army into the city.
On April 22 1809, Sir Arthur Wellesley (later the Duke of
Wellington) arrived and marched on Porto to the north of Lisbon.
On the morning of May 12, on the opposite side of the River
Douro to the city, Wellesley uttered his famous words "Let the men cross." and with
that short sentence began the most audacious move of his career
and set in motion the beginning of the end of Napoleon
Bonaparte.
This famous battle plays a key role in my novel.
